Why Inner West Homes Need the Right Blind

Custom blinds for Inner West Sydney homes are rarely a standard fit. A north-facing living room in Concord receives direct afternoon sun for up to six hours a day. A Federation bedroom in Ashfield has window proportions that no off-the-shelf product will cover cleanly. A renovated apartment in Balmain needs a blind that works with the architecture, not against it. Blinds are window coverings that use a roller, slatted, fabric, or panel mechanism to control light, privacy, and heat inside a room. DDI has been solving these exact problems for Inner West homeowners since 1991 — custom-measuring every window on-site, manufacturing each blind to order at our Sydney studio, and completing every installation with our own team. All products carry a 2-year warranty.

Seven Types of Blinds. All Custom-Made. All Installed by DDI.

Custom Blinds

Most Inner West homes have at least one window that defeats a standard blind — the arched opening above a Leichhardt staircase, the wide picture window of a renovated Strathfield living room, the shallow recess in a Concord brick veneer bedroom. DDI designs and manufactures custom blinds for openings of any dimension, profile, or depth. Every measurement is taken on-site. Every blind is made to order and installed by DDI’s own team, not a subcontractor. 2-year warranty included.

Roller Blinds

Roller blinds are DDI’s most-requested blind type across the Inner West — practical, low-profile, and available in three fabric categories: blockout for complete light elimination, light-filtering for softened privacy, and solar weave for glare reduction that still preserves outward views. North-facing rooms in Drummoyne and Concord benefit most from solar weave, which cuts heat and glare without making a room feel closed off. Motorised versions via Somfy are available for spans over 2 metres or smart home setups.

Roman Blinds

Roman blinds fold into crisp horizontal pleats when raised and hang completely flat when lowered — a look that functions as a genuine design feature rather than just a functional covering. DDI makes Roman blinds from Zepel, Warwick, and Casa Mia fabric collections, so the blind can be colour-matched and texture-matched to existing soft furnishings. Particularly well-suited to Federation homes across Ashfield, Summer Hill, and Croydon, where natural linen weaves and earthy neutrals suit the home’s character.

Venetian Blinds

No other blind type gives the same degree of precise light control as a Venetian. Tilt the slats to angle the afternoon sun away from a screen without closing the room. Open them fully for an unobstructed view. Close them completely for privacy without blocking all air movement. DDI supplies Venetian blinds in 25mm and 50mm slat widths across timber, faux timber, and aluminium finishes, with cord or cord-free operation. The timber slat option suits the natural material palette of renovated Californian bungalows across Burwood, Five Dock, and Homebush.

Glide Panel Blinds

Bi-fold doors and wide sliding doors create openings that a single standard blind cannot span. Glide panel blinds solve this with fabric panels that travel on a ceiling-mounted track and stack flat when fully open, leaving the entire doorway clear. DDI installs glide panel blinds frequently in Inner West homes where alfresco areas connect to open-plan living spaces — openings that commonly reach 4 to 5 metres wide and need a track system rather than a single roller or Roman blind.

Skylight Blinds

An unshaded skylight raises a room’s temperature, creates overhead glare, and makes the space uncomfortable for much of the Sydney day. DDI supplies honeycomb cellular shade blinds for skylights — a dual-layer fabric construction that traps air between cells to reduce heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter. The cellular structure also diffuses light evenly across the room rather than creating a single bright spot. Motorised operation via Somfy is available for skylights that are high or positioned above stairwells.

Fabrics, Systems, and Brands Behind Every DDI Blind

DDI sources blind fabrics from four fabric houses with consistent Australian representation: Zepel, Warwick, Casa Mia, and Mokum. Roller blind fabrics are available in PVC-backed blockout weaves for full light elimination, openweave solar fabrics that reduce glare while preserving outward views, and room-darkening options suited to bedrooms and media rooms. Roman blind fabrics include structured cotton blends, linen-look weaves, and sheer options for layering over a blockout roller. For motorised systems, DDI installs Somfy motorisation systems throughout — quiet, reliable motors compatible with remote, wall switch, and smart home control, including Google Home and Amazon Alexa. Luxaflex® products carry separate brand warranties in addition to DDI’s 2-year coverage.

Every Blind Measured, Made, and Fitted by DDI

DDI does not operate like an online retailer. A qualified DDI decorator visits your home at a time that suits you, bringing a full fabric and sample kit so every selection is made under your room’s actual light conditions — not under showroom lighting. The decorator measures every window on-site, accounting for recess depth, architrave profiles, and any obstacles that affect the recommended fit type. From there, DDI handles the order, manufacture, and installation entirely in-house. No third-party contractors are involved at any stage. To get started, call (02) 9712 2722, visit the showroom at 104 Hampden Road, Russell Lea, or book a free in-home consultation online.

Frequently Asked Questions — Blinds Sydney

Q1: What type of blinds are best for blocking out light in a Sydney bedroom?
A1: Blockout roller blinds are the most effective option for complete light elimination. They use a PVC-backed fabric with zero light transmission through the material itself, though some light can enter around the edges depending on the recess fit. For a full blackout, DDI recommends a cassette-style roller blind with side channels, or layering a blockout roller with blockout curtains for a complete solution. Roman blinds with blockout lining are a softer alternative for period homes.
Q2: What is the difference between roller blinds and Roman blinds?
A2: Roller blinds use a single piece of fabric that rolls onto a barrel at the top of the window — clean, minimal, and practical for kitchens, bathrooms, and contemporary Inner West apartments. Roman blinds fold into horizontal pleats when raised and hang flat when lowered, giving a softer, fabric-forward appearance. Roman blinds suit period homes and formal living rooms where a textile feel is important. Both types are custom-made by DDI to fit any window dimension exactly.
Q3: Can blinds be motorised, and is it worth it for an Inner West home?
A3: Yes — DDI installs motorised blinds using Somfy systems, which operate via remote control, wall switch, or smart home integration, including Google Home and Amazon Alexa. Motorisation is particularly practical for skylights and high windows where manual operation is difficult, and for households wanting to automate morning and evening light adjustments. Somfy motors are whisper-quiet and carry a separate manufacturer’s warranty alongside DDI’s 2-year installation coverage. The cost difference over manual operation is modest for the convenience gained.
Q4: How much do custom blinds cost in Sydney?
A4: Custom blind pricing depends on fabric type, blind style, window dimensions, and operating system. A standard light-filtering roller blind for a typical bedroom window will cost considerably less than a motorised blockout roller for a wide open-plan living area. DDI provides a full written quote after the in-home consultation at no charge. For pricing specific to your windows and fabric preferences, book a free in-home consultation and receive a detailed quote with no obligation to proceed.
Q5: Do I need to measure my windows before contacting DDI about blinds?
A5: No — DDI’s decorator measures every window during the free in-home consultation and accounts for recess depth, architrave profiles, ceiling height, and any obstacles that affect the recommended fit. Providing your own measurements risks errors that affect how the blind sit and operate. Accurate custom measuring is a standard part of the DDI service from the first visit, at no additional charge. This is one of the key differences between DDI and online-only blind retailers.
