Decorating Small Homes: Make the Most of Any Space

Decorating a small space is not an easy task – whether it’s an office or a home – but follow our tips to making the most of the area you have and you can create a beautiful space for yourself.

Maximise storage

You don’t need to remodel in order to solve space issues – just work within your existing space by maximising storage. This is one of the most practical solutions and can be quite cost effective. Some ideas:

  • Utilise floor-to-ceiling shelves in any room
  • Create storage in furniture such as chairs, sofas and beds
  • Add shelves or other storage units above furniture and windows
  • If you have stairs, use the empty space and add shelving units or other accessories
  • Display books on their own display shelf above your sofa or desk
  • Invest in beautiful storage like canisters for the bathroom, jars for the kitchen and baskets for around your home. If you can’t hide belongings behind walls and closets, you can at least display them beautifully!

Arrange furniture wisely

In a small space, every piece of furniture makes an impact. Ensure that you need every item you have and choose each piece wisely so it serves a purpose and makes a statement – don’t cram pieces in if they don’t fit. Once you have your furniture, maximise the layout of each room by positioning furniture in the most optimal spots.

Look for furniture pieces that will serve more than one purpose to eliminate clutter:

  • Mount your TV to the wall instead of buying a stand
  • Hang bed side lamps from the wall or ceiling instead of setting them up on two nightstands
  • Hang keys on hooks near the door instead of adding a table for clutter
  • Choose children’s beds with storage underneath for toys, books and extra clothing

Have an entire room that serves two purposes? For example, if your home office is also a guest room, choose murphy beds or day beds are easily concealed during the day and don’t negate a comfortable bedroom ambiance at night.

Use colours, natural light and mirrors

Colour choices are key for small spaces, and you can use them to visually expand your space. Find key pieces of wall art and accessories, but don’t collect too much clutter. If your home or unit is very small, try to unify the space by creating one similar colour pattern throughout so each room flows into the next. As a general rule, steer clear of dark shades as a prominent colour theme for your home and opt for lighter colour options. If placed correctly, mirrors can reflect light and enhance the space in your home. Place them opposite your windows to help spread light, and see how a smaller space appears both larger and brighter.

Choose the perfect window treatments

Embrace window treatments that are positioned from floor to ceiling in a small space to make the room look larger. Choose sheer window treatments to let some sunlight in – again adding light to the space and creating the illusion of a larger room.

Are you inspired and ready to start decorating your small space? Whether you need help accessorizing or just choosing which window treatments will best suit your room, our experienced decorators can help. Give us a call on 02 9712 2722 to discuss your project with our team.

The Difference Between an Interior Designer and an Interior Decorator?

The job titles ‘Interior Decorator’ and ‘Interior Designer’ are often used synonymously – they sound similar and they are commonly mistaken for one another as they are within the same industry. However, these two jobs are different in several aspects.

Interior Designer

Interior designers match their client’s requirements with the functional layout of any given space – whether that be one room, an entire home, building or office. Typically they work on a building project from the start, sometimes even directly with the architect from the initial building stages. They look at how each room will be used and make sure they are designed practically for the client’s needs, including lighting, layout, sound and sometimes even down to the structure of a building.

Interior Decorator

Interior decorators focus on furnishings in a work or home environment. They use mainly furniture, accessories, textures, paint, fabrics, and colours to enhance the aesthetic appeal of a room, home or office. Ultimately they are concerned with creating or enhancing the visual appearance of their client’s space. Their job is to help bring a client’s dream to life, helping to decipher which style is desired – modern, country, contemporary, traditional, etc. – and bring that vision to life with furnishings and accessories. Decorators typically come in after a building is created and do not make alterations to a building’s structure or foundation.

If you’re looking to the aesthetic in your new home or office, or if you want to update the look in your existing space, our interior decorators are ready to discuss your tast and preferences. With over 20 years of experience, our qualified team will run through all of your ideas and bring your design dreams to life. Call our team on 02 9712 2722 to discuss your next project!

Decorating Trends – Winter 2017

Interior decoration trends are introduced each season. Two of our favourites for winter 2017 are velvet accessories and the use of a range of natural tones.

Photo: GlobeWest

Velvet textures immediately add a luxe aesthetic to your space. It is trending in fashion and is equally fashionable in home decor in 2017. You can choose from major statement pieces, like sofas (see the image featured below), chairs and headboards, or you can accessorise your home or office on a smaller scale to embrace this trend. Objects such as cushions, stools, blankets and ottomans can be more cost effective and less overwhelming – but just as effective and on-trend. Particularly popular colours are blues, greens and pinks, but you can choose from almost any colour to match your existing style. The beauty of velvet is that even when the material wears in, it holds well so it can stay as a statement piece in your home long term.

Natural Tones

Caramel, brick, chocolate, and other earthy colours are trending this winter. You can choose to change the entire look of your room or home to match this look, or more easily accessorise with these colours for the season. The images below feature a very pulled together room styling, with each room focusing on a particular colour theme, but you can add this style into your existing decor as well. Dark green – and similar shades – has also seen a revival in the interior decorating world this season.

Luxaflex® Evo Awning Range

Looking for a beautiful solution for your outdoor space, with easy operation and customisability? Consider the range of Luxaflex® Evo awnings. All of our awnings can also be motorised with sun and wind sensors, making them even easier to operate.

There are several awning models in the range:

Cable guide

Side tension channel

Straight drop

Pivot arm

As its name suggests, sturdy stainless steel cable wires guide the awning as it opens and closes. Cable Guides offer precision control and stability and are the perfect option when tension channels (see below) cannot be affixed to the building.

This has a neat, seamless finish, because there are no cables or wires visible in this model. Channels guide the awning as it opens and closes, stopping the fabric from ‘blowing out’ which gives you greater control over ‘gaps’ and means you can eliminate insects, as well as control privacy, wind and temperature more effectively. Side tension channel operation is usually recommended for high-wind areas.

This version is generally used for uncomplicated building openings where a straight drop awning will effectively cover the space and where there are no posts or walls to affix the blind. Straight Drop awnings are fixed to the ground instead.

Ideal as an external window covering, the Pivot Arm action allows you to change the angle of the awning and manage how much sunlight and glare comes into your home.

Talk to a member of our professional design team today for advice on the most practical awning for your purpose. We visit your premises with samples and personally explain the different applications, showing you how they would look and operate at your home. SoftShades: Product Overview

SoftShades are a stylish, versatile window covering for both the home and office with unique built-in insulation properties. Why choose SoftShades as your chosen window treatment? There are a few benefits to consider:

SoftShades are a cost-effective window treatment because their cellular construction traps air to keep rooms cool in summer and warm in winter, which reduces your need for air conditioning – and your power bills. Honeycomb SoftShades’ unique cellular construction traps air to keep rooms cooler in summer and warmer in winter, reducing your need for air conditioning and lowering your energy bills.

SoftShades are controlled by a variety of reliable lifting systems and give you the option of having only the top or bottom part of your window covered: with the SoftShades lowered to cover the bottom half of a window you can enjoy natural light and total privacy while dining, relaxing on the couch, or working in your office. Move the panels to follow the sun, blocking glare and keeping damaging UV rays out of your eyes and off your furnishings when required.

We custom-design SoftShades to suit a variety of window shapes, while you choose the fabric’s colour and opacity for the required impact. The shades’ thicknesses range from translucents through sheers, to blockouts. ‘Cell’ size can vary too, to suit the scale of your space or size of your window.

All SoftShades have invisible seams and a cord-free design that creates a smooth, streamlined look, while making them safer for children and pets.

Our specialist decorators can visit your home or business to show you the latest range of SoftShades and help you choose a fabric that’s a perfect match to your decor. And for peace of mind, all our window treatments are expertly installed by professionals and come with a two year warranty. Call us to schedule a free measure and quote appointment today on 02 9712 2722.

How to Choose the Right Blinds

Deciding which blinds are right for your home can be daunting, especially when there are so many colours, textures and types of blinds to choose from.

For instance, did you know you have blinds made in fabrics that have fire-retardant properties? These are ideal for kitchen areas. Our team of professional interior decorators will be happy to answer any of your questions, or we can visit you at home for a free measure and quote.

Here are our recommended top considerations to help you get started:

Do you want to make a bold statement with window treatments, or do you want them to blend into the overall decor? This will help you to narrow down a style.

How much privacy do you need at each window’s aspect? Do you want total blockout or a ‘sunscreen’ style covering, which will still offer some of the outside view – but also means your neighbours can see in to some degree.

The sun’s rays can be damaging to floors and furniture.  Too much sun can also make your home hot in the summer months. How much indoor shelter do you need?

The blinds you choose can have an impact on the energy efficiency of your home and your ability to keep a moderate, comfortable temperature inside.

Is it important for you to have sustainable fabric and materials in your blinds? If so, then some brands and ranges will use the eco-friendly supplies you’re looking for.

At Decorating Decor Interiors we know that sometimes help from a professional can be just what you need to make the right choice for your home, from among the exhausting options in home improvement, particularly in window coverings.
